SMTP – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

July 18, 2007

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is an email protocol. It converts an email message into a standard format, and is often used for sending email (from the sender’s computer to the recipient’s email server, or to another staging post on that journey).

Once the email message is at the destination mail server, another email protocol such as Pop3 will often then retrieve and download email from an email server for the recipient’s email client.
